Advanced Programme English

Benaderingswyse (tot onderrig)

Helpies have the opportunity to enrol in the Advanced Programme English (AP English) course.

We have had five groups of learners complete the course since 2013.  In 2017, one of our learners distinguished themselves by achieving 97% and a ranking in the Top 1% of the IEB in this subject.

It is a three year extension of the English Home Language curriculum, and is designed along the lines of the British A-level qualification.  It is intended as an extension opportunity for learners to engage with challenging literary texts in the form of poetry, film, drama and novels.

Contact sessions take place one to two afternoons per week after school according to a schedule established by the teacher and learners.

Learners need to prepare for their contact session by doing the necessary reading so that they can engage actively in the teacher led discussions and reading.

Algemeen

This course is for any enthusiastic learner who has a certain drive and passion for the English language.

It has been observed, since the first Helpmekaar AP English group matriculating in 2013, that the additional exposure, debate and thought processes experienced in AP English has had a marked impact on those learners’ skills, and in some instances results, in the mainstream English curriculum.

Texts need to be purchased by the learners.  With rarer texts, the teacher can order from distributors abroad and the learners will then reimburse the cost.  This saves each learner having to pay the shipping costs separately.

Enrichment is the raison d'être for participation in the AP English classes.

The curriculum is designed with various novels, plays, film and poetry being thematically linked.

The current theme, which will end in 2019, is The Danger of a Single Story.  While the poetry section is compulsory, schools must choose two of the three genres (prose, drama and film).  There are eight novels, nine plays and nine films in the present cycle.

With the poetry, two of the movements must be studied.  Presently the choices are:  Metaphysicals; Romantics; Victorians; Modernists; South African Protest Poetry; and 21st Century South African Poetry.

The 2020 – 2022 cycle that the current Grade 10s are starting with this year is Freedom and Responsibility.   With 12 novels, nine dramas, and 11 films from which to choose, there is something for every literary palate.

The poetry choices still include the Romantics, the Modernists and the Victorians.  Yet the scope has broadened to African poets; South African [poetry] with a Socio-Political Perspective; South African [poetry] with a Humanistic Perspective; Women [poets] / [Poets] Resisting Convention; British [poetry]; and American [poetry].

Essay tasks and internal examinations from Grade 10 need to be completed to ensure that the learners are on standard for the Grade 12 final external examination, which is the culmination of the three year course.

Independent reading of non-curriculum texts is required for Question 3 of the final Grade 12 examination.    This reading cannot be the conventional texts from the English Home Language curriculum that the learners engage with from Grade 8.  Thus, a love for literature and a love for reading in “free time” are vital.

The results, while not included on the learner’s National Senior Certificate, are formally recognised on separate certification.  The assessments and examinations are essay based.  Thus, an interest in literature and writing is beneficial
